As you may know, the Hamilton County Bicentennial is in the process of creating a book, Celebrating Hamilton County, Indiana: 200 Years of Change. While there certainly is enough history out there to fill multiple books, what our book team is really looking for is the history no one has heard about yet! We want this book to be inclusive, up-to-date, and reflective of the county as a whole and its history (even beyond the 200 years we're celebrating!)
In order to accomplish this goal, we want you, the public, to get involved. Like our survey we talked about in our last blog post, the book is a way for you to help influence the type of history we celebrate during the Bicentennial. For our next blog post, we will talk about how to contribute to our book through stories and photographs that you already have prepared. If you think you're ready now, go to the "Our Book" page on our website to see the submission guidelines.
However, if you're like most of us, your family history stories aren't completely organized yet. You may know how your family ended up in Hamilton County, you may know the names of your ancestors, you may have pictures of them - but you have no idea how to get that information to us. Good news!! We are here to help!
We are hosting three scan a thon events in November 2021 throughout Hamilton County to help you get your family history photographs digitized and entered as possible photos to be included in our book. We want these photos to highlight events, buildings, locations, people, etc. in Hamilton County’s nine townships.
As an added bonus, if you participate in this project, you will be eligible for a drawing of a hardcover copy of the bicentennial book (once it is published).
You may be asking, "So how does a scan-a-thon even work?"
We have answers (in conjunction with HEPL's blog post): – Go through your family albums and select about ten photos that you feel depict Hamilton County history (from any time period).
– Call the Hamilton East Public Library (317-770-3236) or look to the sign-up link below for an appointment on one of three days for a time at three different locations: Noblesville, Carmel, and Sheridan.
– After the scanning is completed, an archival copy will be kept for possible use in the book or on the Bicentennial blog, and we will give you a jpeg copy of your images (bring a flashdrive if possible!). You will leave the scanning location with your originals and digital copies of your images.
This is your big opportunity to be a part of Hamilton County history as you share historical family photos. Making appointments will be helpful to avoid a long wait as quality scanning does take time. If you have more than about 10 photos, we may ask you to make an appointment for another time.
